The Lawless EV Racing Team has been working hard to insure that a trip to Virginia Motorsports Park would bear fruit.
May 2011 - The Lawless Racing Team has been back at work breaking speed records at Virginia Motorsports Park (VMP). They redesigned, rebuilt and relocated the Zilla contactor box with double the current carrying capability, relocated the 4K hairball, installed new chain and sprocket, installed a beautiful carbon fiber front wheel with ceramic bearings and prepped the motor.
On the first run of the day, the bike went down the track flawlessly but left wimpy and ran a 7.81 at 177 MPH. Larry McBride came back to the pits and scolded the team for "More Power!!!"
For run two, they used the settings that had been previously calculated. The light turned green and the rear tire instantly went up in smoke…lots and lots of smoke. They grabbed the laptop, backed off the juice a good bit, and Larry restaged.
A decent third launch followed with a 7.26 at 181 MPH showing on the board. A new NEDRA record that needed backed up. No problem. They would back up the run, take a few more shots, then send Larry and Steve to their commitments, and head home with a new record. But, a post run inspection showed a badly blistered tire and a trashed rear sprocket. It looked like the team was headed home with a best ever run, but no improvement on the 7.70 at 168 MPH record.
Then, the McBride men saved the day. They offered to take the entire team 100 miles to their world class shop, where they installed the second of the new OCC rear sprockets. This one was made out of good old hardened alloy steel like the front sprocket. The team installed and balanced a new rear tire, repaired some bad threads in the bead locks, hastily ate some pizza, marveled at all of the historic bike racing photos on the wall, and headed back to VMP.
They got back to the track around 5:30 pm and put the bike back together and prepped for a fourth run. The Zilla settings were left right where they were for the previous run. The bike lost some traction at the lunch, but finally grabbed the track and ran a 7.24 at 185 MPH. Post run inspection showed the bike to be perfect. All that was needed to get ready to run again was a slight chain and tire pressure adjustment, a bit of motor cooling, and a charging of the batteries .
The next run was rewarded with a 7.13 at 187 MPH. The 60 ft was still a dismal 1.23, almost 1.24, but the bike was still strong enough once traction was restored to run 160 MPH in the first 660 ft. Post run inspection showed the bike to be perfect and ready to run again with a quick charge.
Lawless EV Racing Team breaking another world record
By this time, the stiff 10+ headwind was dwindling as was the daylight. The team seriously considered turning up the wick for one more run and taking a shot at 6.99 at 190+, but everyone was exhausted and very happy to have persevered through the early morning trials with a new record. They decided to call it a day.
It was indeed a great weekend. VMP rolled out the red carpet all day long. When the bike was ready to run, they were ready too. No exceptions. Bryan, Cotty, and crew run a beautiful facility and are great individuals. The team will be returning to Virginia Motorsports Park very soon to continue to push the envelope.
